How the Wim Hof Method Works
The Wim Hof Method uses three phases: deep controlled breaths (30–40), breath retention on empty lungs, then a recovery breath held on full lungs. The rapid breathing lowers blood CO₂, which is what lets you hold the retention longer — but it also means this is a stressor, not a relaxation exercise. For the full step-by-step protocol and safety limits, read our Wim Hof breathing guide.
⚠️ Safety
- Never practice this in or near water — shallow water blackout can drown you.
- Always do it seated or lying down on dry land.
- Stop if you feel faint, confused, or experience chest pain.
- Not for people with heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or who are pregnant.
